Overview |
This is a visual aggregator that assembles SCORM 1.2 content aggregation packages into larger SCORM 1.2 content packages. This tool lets you create and edit a flat or nested organization structure for your new package. It also includes a user-friendly metadata editor for the metadata for the new aggregated package. The resulting package is a complete SCORM 1.2 aggregation package that includes a manifest and metadata. If the source packages are SCORM compliant and the metadata are provided as instructed, the resulting content aggregation passes the SCORM 1.2 certification test suite.
This was originally a demonstration application to investigate functional issues that arise when you aggregate packages, and to try out user interfaces for metadata editing. It is used in several production environments by Click2learn customers who uses it to create more complex courses from the simple SCORM packages created by ToolBook™. You can also use it to aggregate packages created by the Single Item Packager, by the Flash Movie Packager, or by any other tool that creates SCORM 1.2 conformant packages. You can even use it to aggregate packages created by this tool into even larger packages. The aggregator supports organizations with up to about 100 nodes. It may be able to handle more, but hard limits have not been tested. The size of the packages that can be built is limited by available system memory and disk space, as well as by limitations imposed by the user interface implementation. Because each aggregated package counts as one node, but may itself include any number of nodes, it is possible in theory to build very complex packages, although whether that makes sense from a content management or pedagogical point of view is debatable. |

Compatible packages Any SCORM 1.2 conformant content aggregation package, which is defined as a package that contains an organization that specifies how to launch one or more SCOs defined as resources in the package. Note that SCORM 1.2 content created by ToolBook™ or by Aspen™ LCMS can be aggregated with this tool. Just export the content as a SCORM 1.2 package. LMS or runtime environment compatibility The aggregator adds packages that contain only a single SCO as resources into the aggregation manifest. On the other hand, any package that contains more than one SCO is aggregated by creating a sub-manifest; therefore, a fully SCORM 1.2 conformant LMS or runtime service that supports sub-manifests is required to view an aggregated package that contain complex packages. Note that the sample SCORM 1.2 RTE currently available from the ADL web site does not support sub-manifests yet. However, leading commercial LMS products that are fully SCORM 1.2 compliant, such as Click2learn's Aspen™ Learning Management Server, can manage and launch SCORM packages that include sub-manifests.
