2003 FS SCORM Flash Template for Macromedia® Flash MX™

Overview

The 2003 SCORM 1.2 HTML publishing template for Flash MX allows Flash developers to call the SCORM API functions by using fscommands within Flash movies. The HTML template also manages automatically various generic aspects of the runtime communication session with the SCORM API, such as initializing the communication session on launch and finishing it as needed. This frees the Flash developer from the responsibility of providing ActionScript code for this in every Flash movie. The template reshapes calls and data so that many older Flash scripts that were compatible with AICC tracking do not have to be reworked for compatibility. In some cases republishing the movie with this template is all that is needed to make the movie SCORM compliant; in other cases, some of the ActionScript scripting can be simplified.

This publishing template was developed and tested as a joint project by Click2learn, Inc. and Pathlore Software Corporation, in cooperation with Macromedia. The aim of this project was to make it easier for Flash developers to create SCORM-conformant learning content that can be delivered through any SCORM-conformant learning-management system (LMS), such as those sold by Click2learn and Pathlore.

Technical info

Conformance
Conformance with SCORM 1.2 is provided by the built-in scripts.

Future-proofing: SCORM 1.3 will introduce some changes in the API. Because the SCORM-specific logic is in the template, it is anticipated that no change to the .fla file, and in particular to embedded ActionScripts, will be required. Only the template will need to be updated for SCORM 1.3 conformance.

Quick notes:

  • Scoring data. The template assumes that either the score value range will be communicated first (min, max then raw) or that the score is scaled on a 0..100 range. For example, the Interactive Quiz template that ships with Flash MX does report a score adjusted to fit a 0..100 scale.
  • Interaction IDs. Every interaction (in other words, every test item) should have a different ID. The Interactive Quiz template uses the same ID for each test item in the quiz. This cannot be tracked properly by a SCORM conformant system. Be sure to give each test item a different ID in a "real" Flash movie.

The publishing template extension includes detailed release notes copied to the 'Extension Help' directory of Flash MX. To preview a copy of the help file, click here (opens in a separate window).
